Ffald-y-Brenin means ‘The King’s Sheepfold’. You’ll see plenty of sheep at your stopover at Grey Alders!
Grey Alders is the perfect bed and breakfast stopover if you are visiting Ffald-y-Brenin.
We are situated in the heart of Carmarthenshire, the land of the Celtic Saints, but only fifteen minutes from the A40 dual carriageway. (Our postcode is SA33 6QN.) It makes us highly accessible and very convenient for the centre of the Grace Outpouring.
If you are coming from England, Scotland or South-East Wales, we are directly on the way to Ffald y Brenin. Accommodation there is necessarily limited. But now you can benefit from all Ffald-y-Brenin has to offer and arrive refreshed if you have come from a distance.
If you were otherwise envisaging a ridiculously early-morning start, we provide a Christian bed and breakfast option to what could have been a challenge. Grey Alders lies just 14 miles north-west of Carmarthen and conveniently 24 miles south-east of Ffald-y-Brenin. The AA Route between us is right here.
The journey from here to Ffald-y-Brenin will take only 50 minutes. Accordingly, you have time for breakfast before heading off to be at that 9.30 am Ffald-y-Brenin Morning Prayer meeting.
To sum up, Grey Alders is the obvious Christian stop over if:
You are visiting the Ffald-y-Brenin prayer and retreat centre
You live anywhere to the east of Pembrokeshire (virtually the whole of the rest of the UK!)
You will be excited to know that when you come to this part of the world you are treading in the steps of pilgrims long ago. The Sixth Century in Wales was the pinnacle of the Age of the Saints. People were attracted by the faith of the men of God. They were enthused by their teachings and their simple, devout way of life. Not least, they came for the healings.
Then, as now, the pilgrims needed accommodation. The numerous monasteries and Christian places of refuge fulfilled the need. Those en route to St Davids, for example, would need somewhere to stay as they travelled. That is exactly what Grey Alders is doing today. Situated on one of the ancient routes, we provide Christian hospitality for Christian pilgrims in a time-honoured way.
In fact, so immersed are we at Grey Alders in our Celtic Christian heritage you might even want to stop over here for an extra day after your visit to Ffald-y-Brenin and walk in the steps of the men of God of fifteen hundred years ago.
Just a short walk from here is the site of the 6th-century community of St Gwinnio at what is now Llanwinio. You can follow the pilgrim trail to Llanwinio and even walk as far as the Saint’s retreat at Cilsant, just five miles away.
